What Is Island Coffeehouse and Books?
Island Coffeehouse and Books is a non-profit business located in the picturesque town of Langley, Washington (on South Whidbey Island) and is a program of the South Whidbey Community Engagement Center, and the South Whidbey Commons, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We are committed to supporting local youth and educational programs.
Program Goals
- Providing job-training skills to local youth
- Creating a warm and inviting gathering place for all members of the community
- Supporting youth art, poetry, writing and music through ongoing performances and workshops
- Implementing innovative new ideas developed by our Youth Advisory Team and volunteers
Youth Training & Community Engagement
Every Island Coffeehouse and Books youth barista/bookseller undergoes and extensive training program to acquire in-depth coffee knowledge and preparation skills, along with book sales and customer service skills. Youth volunteers have learned about the coffee business through trips to Seattle's world-renowned trade fair "Coffeefest" and have learned about the roasting process at Mukilteo Coffee, our Whidbey Island Roastery.
Youth in Philanthropy
As part of the Island Coffeehouse and Books Youth in Philanthropy program, our youth volunteers donate the tips they earn to community organizations. Grants are awarded with those funds to benefit programs and organizations that serve youth. |
